Gear Clear Venting System & Firefighter Cancer

Friday, March 09, 2018

Built to comply with NFP 1851 Standard. Our (Patent Pending) Gear Clear Venting System eliminates gear contaminants from entering the vehicle while keeping your gear dry, well-ventilated and shielded from direct sunlight.

Every time you leave a fire for an emergency scene, your turnout gear retains numerous contaminated and hazardous materials. Keeping your soiled turnout gear in your car for any length of time exposes yourself, family and loved ones to toxin and carcinogens that enter the body through ingestion, inhalation or absorption.

You face enough dangers; stop exposing your family and yourself to harmful off-gassing.

How much do you know about Chapter 9 of the NFPA 1851 Standard?

Tuesday, September 01, 2015

The NFPA 1851 Standard was first issued in 2001 and has been enhanced over the years.  The main focus has been on Selection, Inspecting, Cleaning, Repairing, Storing, Testing and Retiring PPE.  Over the past few years many studies have studies have repeatedly demonstrated credible evidence and biologic creditability for statistically higher rates of multiple types of caner in firefighters compared to the general population.  The exposure to carcinogens for firefighters are everywhere!

Progress has been made in the cleaning, inspecting, testing, repairing and retiring of PPE, but not much has changed nation wide in storage practices.  Chapter 9 of the NFPA 1851 standard focuses on storage of your PPE or Turnout Gear.

The standard recommends that gear:
  • Not stored in direct sunlight or exposed to direct sunlight while not being worn
  • Cleaned and dry before stored
  • Not to be stored in an airtight container unless new and unused
  • Not stored below -25 degrees or above 180 degrees
  • Shall not be stored or transported in compartments or trunks with sharp objects
  • Not stored with contaminants
  • Should never be folded but hung
  • Should never be stored in living quarters with personal belongings.
  • Should never be transported in the passenger compartment of a vehicle
  • Must be clean, dry and well ventilated when stored

A major concern has been the transporting of turnout gear after a fire or "call".  Many volunteers regularly transport contaminated PPE and other gear in their personal vehicles, exposing themselves, family, friends and pets to toxins repeatedly.  Some may and continue to store PPE in their trunks or passenger compartment which only facilitates off-gassing.

There are many ways to comply with the 1851 standard from on scene decontamination, to proper cleaning, proper storage, maintenance, and retirement of your Turnout Gear.  These standards were developed to protect firefighters so they can safely do their job.
